Originally created in 2000 in São Paulo by Jones Bergamin and occupying a house from the 1950’s designed by Vilanova Artigas, the gallery opened with a retrospective of the artist Iberê Camargo. Between 2001 and 2005, André Millan was a partner and organized shows of Mira Schendel, Lygia Pape, Tunga and Miguel Rio Branco. During this period, the gallery also presented collective exhibitions with guest curators: “Através” [“Through”], curated by Lisette Lagnado, is a historic moment, presenting “Tteia” for the first time, perhaps Lygia Pape’s masterpiece (now on permanent view at Inhotim). The gallery put on individual shows of artists such as José Resende, José Bento, Aluísio Carvão, Alair Gomes, Carlos Vergara, Milton Dacosta, as well as collective exhibitions, such as “Arte Cinética” [Kinetic Art], “Os Modernistas” [The Modernists], “As Bienais” [The Biennials] and the exhibition “Nus” [Nudes], in partnership with Fortes Vilaça gallery.
In 2012, Antonia Bergamin, the daughter of Jones Bergamin, took over as gallery director along with Thiago Gomide. The partners defined a new profile for the now Bergamin & Gomide gallery is specialized in private sales of Brazilian and foreign artists with a focus on the Post-War period and opened a new space on Oscar Freire street in August 2013.
Without a fixed roster, Bergamin & Gomide is free to work with a large number of artists, whether they are established or young, Brazilian or foreign. This freedom also allows us to organize exhibitions with different themes, periods and movements. With a calendar of 4 exhibitions per year (both solos and collectives) like “E você nem imagina que Epaminondas sou eu” (2014), showcasing works by Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato, curated by Rivane Neuenschwander e Alexandre da Cunha, “Atributos do Silêncio” (2015) a collective show curated by Felipe Scovino, the first gallery solo exhibition by German artist Joseph Beuys – “BEUYS” (2016) featuring sculptures, works on paper and videos including “Felt Suit” and “I like America and America likes me”, the group show “In Between” (2016) curated by Luisa Duarte, “Fabio Mauri (Senza Arte)” (2017) dedicated to the Italian artist, “Mira Schendel: Sarrafos and Black and White Works” (2018) featuring Sarrafos, painting, and works on paper and the group show “Estratégias Conceituais (Conceptual Strategies)” (2018), curated by Ricardo Sardenberg.
Add to that, Bergamin & Gomide participates in international and national art fairs like Art Basel Hong Kong, SP-Arte, TEFAF NY Spring, Art Basel, Semana de Arte, ArtRio, FIAC! and Art Basel Miami Beach and do special projects with foreign galleries.
